# CAT Practice : Averages, Ratios, Mixtures

When we mix two mixtures in a particular ratio, we get a third mixture. Given the third mixture how does one find the ratio in which they were mixed.

## Alligation

Q.31: What is the ratio in which water should be mixed with a coke concentrate costing Rs 15/litre to make a profit of 30% by selling the resultant drink at Rs 18/litre
1. 12:1
2. 11:1
3. 1:10
4. 1:12

Choice D. 1:12

## Detailed Solution

C.P. to get 30% profit at Rs 18/litre = $\frac{18}{1.3} = \frac{180}{13}$
Therefore,

= ) $\frac{15}{13} : \frac{180}{13}$
= ) 1: 12
Note: Make sure you don’t mark 12:1 since in the question, water has been mentioned first. This can be a silly trap to fall into after all the hard work.
